ABSTRACT

This study attempts to reveal how growing local communities in South Korea defend the lifeworld with social capital and communicative publicness by grassroots public sphere based on Habermas’ colonization thesis of lifeworld from the system. In doing so, the study singled out the “Gwanjeo Community Unite” in Gwanjeo-dong, Seo-gu, Daejoen-si as the case of local communities and conducted in-depth interview and local media analysis as research methods. In this result, the social capital formulated by communication expands social values as common good apart from economic logics and the residents created the publicness autonomously. Futhermore, the discussion of grassroots level made them interests in politics, it shows the feasibility of life politics.
