ABSTRACT

Korea was a continuation of turmoil throughout society in the 1980s. The main force in these times was the social movement. Intellectuals also played a role in the social movement based on academic activities. This study was conducted to investigate the influences, performance and limitations of social movements on intellectuals’ academic activities. The spatial background is Jeonnam province and Gwangju, and the subject was academic activities of Korea institute of contemporary social studies. Korea institute of contemporary social studies is a non-institutional academic organization established in Gwangju with a heritage of 5·18. The Korea institute of contemporary social studies prioritized survey and research on 5·18, but in parallel to the modern and contemporary area studies to improve the completeness of the 5·18 research. However, the study of modern and contemporary area studies soon became an independent subject. Since the mid 1990s, studies of modern and contemporary area studies has become the main theme in academic activity, and has produced the largest achievements. Achievements are organized into 3 categories. 1) Reconsideration and restoration of history before and after liberation of Jeonnam, 2) First publication of the research report on modern and contemporary area movement history of Jeonnam, 3) Modern and contemporary reconstruction of Jeonnam area based on personage. However, the Korea institute of contemporary social studies didn’t overcome structural problems at the time of establishment, limitations and challenges of local non-institutional academic organization.
