ABSTRACT

This paper examines the aspects of the progressive political forces expressing anti-Americanism in the mode of 'politics of resistance' and its factors through examples of the anti Korea-US FTA movement during the Roh Moo-Hyun government. The politics of resistance is a conception that contrast with 'alternative politics' in the way of expressing perception and attitude of the government's main policies. In particular, they oppose government's main policies, and mainly mobilize radical social movement ideologies and collective actions such as rally and demonstration. Especially, the point of this paper, which is intended to be discussed, Why did South Korea's progressive political forces express anti-Americanism as a political mode of resistance to foreign policy issues such as the Korea-US FTA, despite the successful entry into the area of institutional politics during the Roh Moo-Hyun government after democratization? In particular, Why did they depend om the anti-American nationalist ideology and collective action that was formed and used mainly during the anti-dictatorial democratic-revolutionary movement in the 1980s? In response, this paper presents three factors. First, The leadership of the anti-Americans, who were the mainstream in the progressive politics forces but tended to prefer the political mode of resistance. Second, the Roh Moo-Hyun government's non-democratic or unilateral propulsion style and the trap of differentiation as the only opposition in the National Assembly. Third, limitation of institutional Alternative propulsion due to the minority status in the National Assembly. These three factors were linked together and worked in a context.
