AB - This investigation scrutinizes the functional significance of nouns as delineated in the “Modern Chinese Dictionary” (7th edition), dissecting the methodologies employed in their definition within reference works. By methodically categorizing the various functional roles and semantic diversities of nouns, the present study uncovers a spectrum of roles such as protective connotations, manifestations of emotional desires, metaphorical implications, and inductive explanatory nuances. The research underscores the pervasive nature of the dualities inherent in noun functional meanings, emphasizing the necessity for meticulous delineation within lexicographical entries. Drawing upon the conceptual framework of verb resultant meanings, the paper introduces a novel definition schema tailored for noun functional meanings, thereby enhancing the precision and scholarly robustness of dictionary definitions. Furthermore, the manuscript explores the utility of noun functional meanings within pedagogical and compu- tational linguistics contexts, offering novel insights and theoretical underpinnings to adjacent fields of inquiry. The findings of this inquiry extend beyond mere lexicographical craftsmanship, contributing to the advancement of linguistic theories as a whole.
