ABSTRACT

Using Lefebvre’s Spatial triad, this study examines how Song-dynasty Huaben construct the urban spaces of Bianjing and Lin’an. The development of Huaben reflects a dynamic cycle among space practice, representation space, space representation, forming a self-reinforcing mechanism within the texts. Urban practices—night markets, entertainment quarters, expanding commercial districts—shaped the locations of storytelling, social interactions, and everyday rhythms. These lived experiences were transformed into regional narrative styles and symbolic imagery, which then formed shared cultural meanings. Such representational spaces influenced institutional design and cultural transmission, as repeated narrative symbols shaped collective perceptions of the city and even affected governance and cultural production. Lin’an’s preference for refined living, for example, stimulated printing markets and literary consumption. Institutional changes in turn reshaped spatial practice, expanding urban cultural spaces and generating new themes and audiences for Huaben. This reciprocal “space–text” production highlights how the distinctive urban environments of Bianjing and Lin’an not only nurtured literary creativity but also developed in tandem with popular storytelling.
