ABSTRACT

Second language (L2) learners of Chinese often struggle to distinguish the subtle nuances between synonymous words within the same category. Their understanding of physical action verbs is frequently insufficient, leading to issues such as confusion or misuse. Unlike grammatical categories, semantic categories contain numerous synonyms without explicit markers or binary oppositions. Therefore, from the perspective of lexical typology and using cross- linguistic universals of hand-action verbs as a reference, this study employs conceptual component analysis to link related sememes and establish a sememe system. The goal is to provide a detailed description and explanation of the vocabulary related to "throwing" in Modern Chinese.
