ABSTRACT

The Huayanjing shu chao 華嚴經疏鈔 by Qingliang Chenguan 澄觀 (738~839) was the representative commentary on the 80-fascicle Huayan jing 華嚴經. Chenguan neither composed a commentary on the Zhonglun nor wrote a treatise on the idea of “middle way.” Instead , he suggested a dual type of middle way in his commentary. There are five types of middle way, in the Huayan scholarship in East Asia of the Middle Ages, that is dual, triple, quadruple , and the quintuplet type of the middle way.Chenguan set up the dual types of the middle way, namely th e absolute truths middle way (眞諦中道) and two truths middle way (二諦中道) in the Huayanjing shu chao. And Chengguan ’s theory of the middle way was expanded into the five types of the middle way as evidenced in the Huayan jing tanxuanjueze ji 華嚴經談玄決擇記 by Xianyan 鮮演 (1055~1101). The theory of the middle way, in Huayan scholarship of Medieval East Asia, is based on the relationship between true emptiness (眞空) and expedi ent existence (幻有). It is especially focused on the interactions between subject-oneness (能卽) and object-oneness (所卽), and explanation of the methods of both dual negation (雙遮) and dual affirmation (雙表) of all things among other interactions. Xianyan offered a deeper explanation of true emptiness and expedient existence as well as the two truths doctrine. He provides repeated explanation of organic actions among things and functions or existence and phenomenon, In Conclusion, the theory of the five types of middle way (五重中道) was appraised as being a very unique doctrine presented by Huayan scholars of the modern times. And the detailed analysis of the middle way in Huayan scholarships in East Asia of the Middle Ages, is considered to be of great value.
