AB - This study aims to examine how Zongmi (宗密, 780-841), in his Commentary on the Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna (hereafter Zongmishu), appropriated the writing of Fazang in his Commentary on the Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna (hereafter Fazangshu). While Zongmishu closely follows the text and content of Fazangshu, Zongmi deleted approximately two-thirds of the explanatory commentary (懸談). This study investigates whether Fazang’s other work, Shiermenlun-Zongzhiyiji (hereafter Zongzhiyiji), might have been consulted during the compilation process.
When comparing the “Those Who Receive the Teaching” (敎所被機) sections of the two texts, it can be confirmed that Zongmi set aside the lengthy explanations in Fazangshu and incorporated explanations of “It is in order to cause sentient beings to ...” (爲欲令衆生) from the Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna. He also added his own position regarding the five spiritual lineages (五種性). Such discussions appear similarly in Fazang’s Zongzhiyiji. The Zongzhiyiji concludes by stating that it “encompasses both the Initial Teaching (始敎) and the Final Teaching (終敎).” If Zongmi referred to this, it would mean that in “Those Who Receive the Teaching,” he emphasized not only the Final Teaching but also the Initial Teaching.
Zongmi completed his Great Commentary on the Perfect Enlightenment Sutra in 823. During this process, he acknowledged that he “consulted various commentaries (章疏).” In particular, he extensively quoted approximately 1,190 characters from the Zongzhiyiji. Given that Zongmishu was compiled between 821-823, there is a possibility that the discussion in “Those Who Receive the Teaching” was composed with reference to the Zongzhiyiji.
Ultimately, it would seem that Zongmi deleted the existing descriptions in Fazangshu [discontinuity] while simultaneously utilizing other parts of Fazangshu and the Zongzhiyiji [continuity] to express his own position. Through this approach, he appears to have sought to demonstrate his syncretic doctrinal stance.
