ABSTRACT

This study examines the differences in the interpretation of the Four Kinds of the Four Noble Truths (四種四諦) between the Three Major Commentaries of the Tiantai School (天台三大部) and the Commentaries on the Vimalakī rti Sutra (維摩經疏類). Although both corpora represent the later period of Zhiyi’s (智顗, 538-597) works and share a close doctrinal connection, notable discrepancies are evident in terminology, scriptural sources and citations, and―most prominently―in their reception of the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanā- da-sūtra (勝鬘經) and the doctrinal position of the Śrīmālā school’s master (勝 鬘師). The Commentaries on the Vimalakīrti Sutra employ multiple alterna- tive designations for the Four Kinds of the Four Noble Truths, draw upon diverse scriptural sources including the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra (涅槃經) and the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda-sūtra, and adopt an integrative and harmonizing stance. By contrast, the Three Major Commentaries standardize and unify terminology, reconstruct the doctrine around the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, and reject both the interpretation in the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda-sūtra and the doctrinal position of the Śrīmālā school’s master. While the composition of the Commentaries on the Vimalakīrti Sutra (595-597) postdates the lec tures underlying the Three Major Commentaries (585-594), all extant versions of the latter were compiled after Zhiyi’s death by his disciple Guanding (灌頂, 561-632). The close correspondence between Guanding’s own writings and the Three Major Commentaries suggests substantial editorial intervention rather than a verbatim record of Zhiyi’s original teaching. Consequently, the Commentaries on the Vimalakīrti Sutra should serve as the primary refer- ence for reconstructing Zhiyi’s doctrinal intent, with the Three Major Com- mentaries subjected to critical comparative analysis.
