AB - My aim in this article is to prove that there is not the Theory of ‘Pure Land in One’s Mind’ in Wonhyo’s View on Pure Land in his Muryangsugyeong Jong-yo(Doctrinal Essentials of the Sūtra of Immeasurable Life) and Bulseol Amitagyeong So(Commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha).
Firstly, from the context of ‘The General Sense of the Sūtra’, I found out the meaning of the phrase of ‘Defiled Land and Pure Land come from One Mind’ doesn’t support the theory of ‘Pure Land in One’s Mind’. I cited Gikai’s Private Note, Awakening of Faith, and Shandao’s Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra for proving my standpoint.
Secondly, One Mind in the phrase of ‘Defiled Land and Pure Land come from One Mind’ denotes that ‘One Mind’ and ‘Pure Land in One Mind’ are not synonym. If ‘One Mind’ is ‘Pure Land in One Mind’, It will be true that ‘One Mind’ can be ‘Defiled Land in One Mind’ simultaneously.
Thirdly, the concept of ‘Utmost Attention’ in Contemplation Sūtra and Tanluán’s Short Essay on the Pure Land is different from One Mind in ‘The General Sense of the Sūtra’. ‘Utmost Attention’ means only ‘One Thought’ or ‘Ten moments of Mindfulness’.
Lastly, I proposed that Wonhyo had preferred Pure Land in physical dimension in his Commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra. While Vasubandhu understood ‘Food’ in Sūtra of Immeasurable Life as dhyāna-samādhi in spiritual dimension, Wonhyo considered it as meal in physical dimension.
