ABSTRACT

This study aim to explore how formed of the Korean animation industry during 1960s~1970s. A Japanese animator Nobuhide MORIKAWA insisted that he had chosen the “first” Korean animators in TBC(Tongyang Broadcasting Company). He stated that a high-ranking government official of Japan let him go to Korea after Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea. MORIKAWA's mission was to teach animation techniques in TBC. As his statement shows, it is clear that Korean animation industry have had deep relationship with Japan. However it is necessary to verify MORIKAWA's statement. Is it true that TBC animation team built Korean animation industry? If it is true, how did they create Korean animation industry? This study approach the issues through oral statement on the professionals of Korean animation industry in the 20th Century. To determine whether Japanese animator MORIKAWA had employed the “first” animator in Korea, this study also investigated documents. As a result, this paper sheds light on the point that there had been already animators in Korea before TBC animation team formed. Furthermore, TBC animation team did not have strong influences in Korean animation industry. The reasons are as follows. First, TBC animation team existed only 3 years. It was not enough time to have a decisive effect on Korean animation industry. Secondly, there was only one person, Jeong Kyu YIM, who had worked as an animator after TBC animation team broke up. TBC's infra did not work in Korean animation industry. However, TBC animation team has symbolic meaning in Korean animation history. Firstly, Korean learned animation in TBC as the cutting-edge technology at an inceptive stage of animation industry. Secondly, TBC showed that animation can be a promising business for the next generation.
