ABSTRACT

There are three aspects in sphere of arts, that is an artist, works of arts, and audience. When we find new world through works of arts, in that process we will realize importance of interpretation of works of arts. Also it is important what is a criteria of interpretation in contemporary hermeneutics. In this article, we will deal with the problem of interpretation of works of arts in terms of Pragmatism. Especially we will discuss a relationship between interpretation of works of arts and understanding of works of arts following to Richard Shusterman and Susan Sontag's viewpoints. In this process, we will find out the problem of hermeneutical universalism in understanding of arts, and we will suggest an alternative for understanding of works of arts in terms of Pragmatists. Finally we will examine the meaning of debate between hermeneutical universalism and Pragmatism.
