ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to examine the case of convergence education for effective development of traditional technology-based R & D projects and to identify its role and necessity. The results are summarized as follows. First, convergence education provides a base knowledge that enables products using traditional technology to acquire technical merit and to have value as a product that reproduces ‘tradition’. Second, convergence education plays a role in expanding the intellectual background of professional workforce directly involved in product production and deepening cultural sensitivity. Designers and producers can make product storytelling based on this background knowledge and maximize added value by producing products with traditional values and socio-cultural meaning. Third, the background knowledge provided by convergence education provides an opportunity to secure diversity of consumer choice by providing ideas on how to select and deliver the products produced based on what criteria are used Convergence education for R & D projects based on traditional technologies is a kind of knowledge curation in that researchers organize and provide a variety of knowledge for companies, designers with traditional skills, and artisans participating in modernizing them.
