ABSTRACT

This study aims to find a method of specific and practical class operation for composition of speech script in the speech education as a college liberal education. Specifically, it examines whether metaphors can be used as a strategy to achieve the goal of speaker in a speech by using metaphors to express essential content of speech. Metaphor is a way of reasoning whereby a target to explain is understood as a new and unfamiliar target, and a method of more clearly expressing the thought. Furthermore, speech requires a different method of writing script from regular writing methods because speech is a communication activity that has to convey a message targeting audience of various characteristics and achieve the goal of speech in a limited time. Therefore, metaphors can be used as a method in writing a script for speech. This study examined the metaphor usage patterns by targeting 100 lectures in a lecture program, <15 minutes to Change the World>, and checked how metaphors were actually used in actual speeches by linking the structure of regular lectures and positions of using essential metaphors. Furthermore, it is expected that by using the cognitive dissonance concept, if an essential metaphor related to a subject matter is used in the structure and expression of main message, it can become cognitive stimulation that brings out temporary tension in the audience; and if the tension of audience is resolved through explanation based on mapping of the conceptual metaphor, the lecture content will be conveyed interestingly and clearly. It is expected that in future, this study can be used as practical educational content and method for students in the speech education.
