ABSTRACT

The present study reviewed the case studies of liberal arts education related to classical reading education from the late 1990s to recent times. Cases of liberal education were roughly categorized into two groups - first based their objectives: ‘communication education’, ‘character education’, ‘text-oriented education’ which induces self-immersion and self-inquiry, and ‘extracurricular reading’ that emphasizes practical activities related to education. Then, in terms of specific teaching methods, there was the ‘Integrated Reading-Writing-Speaking (or Listening)’ type, ‘Reading-Writing-centered’ type which considers speaking auxiliary, and a ‘Reading-oriented’ type which focuses on topic exploration and expansion based on thorough or in-depth reading. Case studies show that, first, Korean university education reflects the changes in reading culture. Second, that liberal arts education has been institutionalized within the ubiquity of university education and that it has acquired educational status, and third, they serve as an example of the diversification of liberal arts education programs and is meaningful in that it can share educational resources. However, case studies may show weakness as academic papers because they are based on individual experiences or intuitive judgments. We may question whether the process of converging individual cases into the discourse of liberal arts education and expanding the discourse draws a virtuous cycle. Variants of reading classics in university education will continue to appear as a response to the demands of the times requiring a new literacy. Therefore, for sustainable case studies, substantial discussions on the basic elements, reasoning, and methods required for case studies are needed, along with discussions on research ethics.
