AB - Kim Hyun's representative essays in criticism 『The Status of Korean Literature』(1977) compressively show his characteristic literary view focusing on literature. Kim Hyun longed for the freedom of literary reading without suppression. Kim Hyun was an elite literarist who absolutized the literature by saying that the literature would be the only one showing the world without suppression. His literary theory like this could be only applied to the ideal reading environment. Kim Hyun who emphasized the autonomy of literature criticized the standardization of metadiscourse, and also completed the theory representing the identity of right-wing literature after the Korean War. Kim Hyun aimed to show that his liberal literary theory was not the escapism, but the theoretical practice. However, his literary theory was limited to be distributed only to the literary field and elite intellectuals. Kim Hyun's literary theory aimed to reach the ideal utopia by filling up the deficiency through the literary ‘reading/writing’ aiming to fill up the deficiency of reading and reality. Kim Hyun's literary theory of unfinalizability and pluralism presented in 『The Status of Korean Literature』 is valid not only for modern times, but also post-modern times. Also, in case when the dichotomous conflicts are intensely occurred on the basis of collective camp logics, it could be used as a means for solving the problem. This books is currently recognized as a must-read book and classic for the readers aiming for literary reading without suppression, and the right-wing literary men emphasizing the autonomy of literature.
