ABSTRACT

The study investigated perceptions on a blended form of English language classes that combines face-to-face and online instruction among university students. To do so, I conducted a survey of 470 university students in Gyeonggi Province to investigate their preferences for types of English language classes, areas of learning they hoped to cover in each type of class, and considerations for blended English language classes. The results showed that students had a higher preference for online and blended classes than face-to-face classes, and there were differences in the areas of learning they hoped to cover based on the type of class. In addition, students most preferred a vertically blended form of class that continues one type of class delivery (face-to-face or online) for a while and 3 credits and 3 hours of instruction per week. In terms of online classes, students perceived that technical aspects of class management were more important than learner or instructor factors both in asynchronous or synchronous classes. The study identified student demand for blended English language classes and provided guidance for planning such classes based on student perceptions.
