ABSTRACT

This study first analyzed changes in general education courses on China based on the Korea OpenCourseWare (KOCW) platform. Around 2020, the curriculum shifted from covering diverse areas such as Chinese studies, literature, history, and culture to more introductory, culture-centered courses. In terms of content, culture became increasingly emphasized in introductory and economic courses; political science and history courses showed a transition from single-subject to integrated formats; while literature and geography courses remained relatively stable. These trends were similarly observed in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan universities. Metropolitan institutions largely maintained their pre-2020 focus, offering traditional courses in Chinese studies, literature, and history, whereas non-metropolitan institutions exhibited a more distinct convergence toward culture-centered introductory courses, resembling the post-2020 KOCW trend. As a result, non-metropolitan universities showed a narrowing of course diversity with a stronger concentration on culture, while student demand for China-related courses was gradually declining even in metropolitan areas. The significance of this study lies in its assessment of the current status and changes in the field, as well as its suggestions for improvement and future tasks reflecting learner needs.
