ABSTRACT

Since the late 1990s, the global expansion of the Korean Wave, spearheaded by K-pop, has significantly heightened international interest in Korean popular culture. This cultural shift has catalyzed a growing demand for Korean language learning, leading to the adoption of various pedagogical approaches utilizing popular media such as films, dramas, K-pop, and sitcoms. This thesis proposes an integrated language and culture education model for foreign learners by utilizing the sitcom High Kick Through the Roof as an efficient instructional medium. Unlike previous studies that prioritized formal criteria such as linguistic purity or temporal efficiency, this research focuses on the practical value of the sitcom's socio-historical context, interpersonal dynamics, and cultural nuances. Through a comparative analysis with other installments in the High Kick series, this study demonstrates why High Kick Through the Roof serves as an optimal text for gaining insight into Korean language and society. Based on an analysis of all 126 episodes, the study establishes selection criteria and utilization strategies aligned with specific learning objectives, culminating in a structured four-step instructional model. Furthermore, the paper addresses potential challenges in sitcom-based instruction by proposing differentiated strategies tailored to learner proficiency. This research concludes that sitcoms, as repositories of everyday discourse and social values, are highly effective resources for fostering learner engagement and providing an integrated education of Korean language and culture.
