ABSTRACT

With the release of ChatGPT 3.5 on November 30, 2022, traditional university writing education has faced a serious challenge. The use of artificial intelligence by students is rapidly increasing due to large language models (LLMs). In a survey of 110 students enrolled in Chung-Ang University’s general education ‘Writing’ course during the second semester of 2025, 86 students reported using AI for their writing assignments. This indicates that 78.18% of students are submitting writing assignments with using of AI. To address this, university writing curricula must also evolve. The author proposes the following: First, on-site discussions between instructors and students regarding the fundamental question of “Why do we write?” must be strengthened. Second, changes are required in the methods of evaluating writing as part of university liberal arts education. Third, offline handwriting classes are necessary. Fourth, it is necessary to consider measures that allow students to voluntarily disclose their use of AI in academic ethics education. Fifth, university writing education must address topics that engage with the issue of the “public nature of science and technology.” AI-generated writing is filled with “empty eloquence.” Therefore, since university writing education touches upon the realm of human expression—reading, thinking, and writing—it must be redesigned with a future-oriented perspective focused on enhancing human capabilities.
