AB - This paper proposes educational content designed to cultivate humanistic thinking, one of the central objectives of liberal arts education, through a reading of The Visit by the Swiss writer Friedrich Duerrenmatt.
Humanistic thinking refers to the ability to reflect on the meaning and values of a genuinely human life. The Visit presents major themes that invite ethical reflection on human existence in modern capitalist society.
In particular, the work offers a critical examination of distorted love, the instrumentalization of justice, and the problems of hatred and violence.
First, the value of love in romantic relationships is corrupted and distorted by materialistic thinking. Second, justice is portrayed not as a genuine ethical value but as an instrumental ideology employed to serve individual interests and achieve particular ends. Finally, the work demonstrates that hatred and violence not only undermine human freedom and happiness but also paralyze the ethical consciousness of society as a whole. These themes remain highly relevant in contemporary society. Therefore, The Visit can be regarded as a meaningful content for liberal arts education, as it fosters students’ critical thinking and reflective capacities regarding the issues facing our society.
