ABSTRACT

This article examines how Gangdomongyurok represents women who died for their chastity on Ganghwa Island. In particular, this article focuses on the ending where Monk Cheongheo who went to Ganghwa Island to mourn those who died in the war returns without mourning women who died to keep their chastity. This paper suggests it means a failure of mourning and tries to examine what the author wanted to say through the failure of mourning. For this, this article analyzes the speeches of women in Gangdomongyurok and compares them to those in other records such as epitaphs. This research found that the women in Gangdomongyurok openly criticize their husbands and sons and wails in resentment even accepting that it is natural of them to die for their chastity. This reveals the cracks in the Confucian female subjects, and praising them for their chastity is neither comforting nor mourning.
