ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the establishment and early operation of the Armed Forces Cemetery. Its research results are summarized as follows: Firstly, the preparation process for the construction of the Armed Forces Cemetery was examined. The final candidate site for the Armed Forces Cemetery was selected as Dongjak-dong, Seoul in September 1953 through nine field surveys. Various factors were considered for the selection of the final candidate site while President Syngman Rhee's approval was the most decisive factor. After selecting the final candidate site, the plan for the establishment and operation of the Armed Forces Cemetery was made on November 25, 1953. This included the key points of the establishment of the Armed Forces Cemetery. Secondly, the construction of the Armed Forces Cemetery and its initial operation were examined. The representative unknown soldier was buried behind the Unknown Soldier Monument built in the Armed Forces Cemetery to commemorate the entire war dead of the Korean War. This way of commemoration seems to be influenced by the Arlington National Cemetery. After the establishment of the Armed Forces Cemetery, the procedure for transferring war dead to the Armed Forces Cemetery and other specific procedures were made for the burial of war dead. Around May 1957, 4,351 were buried for the first time, and an annual plan was established to bury about 40,000 by 1959.
