ABSTRACT

This study investigates the long-term effects of 1970s industrial complex development in Gyeongsangnam-do on gender-based violence support services and women’s political participation. Industrialized areas show higher levels of counseling and victim support than non-industrialized areas. Within these areas, higher female employment correlates with lower use of such services, while a greater share of male manufacturing workers is linked to higher women’s voter turnout. These findings suggest that industrialization exposed women to greater risks of violence and labor market inequality, yet also spurred engagement with institutional resources and political participation. The study advances the gendered political economy literature by showing how industrialization both reinforces gender inequality and shapes women’s responses.
