AB - This study empirically analyzes the extent to which anti-Chinese sentiment impacts the quality of life (QoL) of Chinese residents in South Korea. Specifically, it examines whether social integration variables negatively correlate with QoL satisfaction and tests statistical differences between Chinese residents and other foreign nationals.
The findings are as follows. First, the QoL and social environment satisfaction of Chinese residents show an overall upward trend. Second, while social integration variables constrain QoL satisfaction, institutional and administrative variables contribute most significantly to the overall explanatory power. Third, compared to other foreign nationals, Chinese residents report lower levels of residential difficulties. Their perception of "social prejudice and discrimination against foreigners"—an issue directly linked to anti-Chinese sentiment—remains at a similar level to that of other nationalities. Notably, foreign nationals from other countries report greater difficulties in "establishing smooth social ties with Koreans." In conclusion, while statistical evidence confirms that anti-Chinese sentiment negatively affects the QoL satisfaction of Chinese residents, this should be interpreted as a manifestation of broader xenophobia pervasive in Korean society. Consequently, designating anti-Chinese sentiment as a major variable in deteriorating bilateral ties and placing it on the official diplomatic agenda requires reconsideration. Formalizing issues that potentially reinforce a "culprit" image is counterproductive.
