AB - In contemporary social situation, knowledge․culture․art are usually defined in terms of industry. And recently the estimation of their value is made not by their practice but by their economic effect and interest. Particularly since the early 1960s, there have been a wide range of persuasive arguments and critical theories put forward in relation to the issue as to how western capitalist societies should manage or maintain the fields of intellectual-emotional lives. However, it is apparent that in the current cultural climate the important characters of knowledge, culture and art ―― for example, the principles of autonomy and publicity ―― are often overlooked under the blind pursuit of economic success. In this paper, my subject matter is to explicate what sort of attributes in knowledge, culture and art should be pursued and how we can encourage them in our times as the multi-cultural era. The title of this essay, "Art as Publicity, Otherness, Plurality: On Mind of Culture and Art in the Multi-cultural Era", indicates two arguments of mine regarding today's humanities and art. First, I argue that the social function of art in multi-cultural society is to develop the mind of publicity, otherness, and plurality. With that spirit I examine H. Arendt's reconceptualization of Kant's political philosophy, E. Levinas's concept of otherness, and W. Benjamin's theory of art ―― especially 'the function of art' as a medium for 'a society without class and exploitation' ―― and interpret them within the goal of my research. Secondly, from the aspect of art's productive influence for the community, I will suggest how art can function as a medium through which the masses build up the mind of diversity and harmony, and move toward the aesthetical-political actions. In the latter part of the discussion, I analyze two examples: one is 7th Gwang-ju Biennale exhibition and the other is a video-art work of Korean artist Park Chan-Kyung. Exhibition rhetoric and visual image politics in the contemporary international art scene are chiefly aimed at public audience from the diverse cultural backgrounds. But in many instances, the western/white/male/specialist-centered contemporary art tends to exclude the cultural minority from the field of art production and reception. I explore this issue with special reference to the aforementioned two examples.
