AB - This paper intends to explore the multi-semantics and connotations of the term 'Baoying(retribution)', and through the analysis of historical texts, discuss the changes of its meaning and the process of its semantic connotation, and the changes of the concept of retribution. The historical background and social factors are also considered. The current research is not enough to explain the semantics and conceptual genealogy of retribution concept. Therefore, this study intends to discuss and reconstruct the process of accumulation and the concept construction of Baoying's semantics through text analysis. This article focuses on the study of Chinese traditional retribution concepts and related concepts before the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty firstly. Then it discusses the influence of Buddhist translation on the concept of retribution, as well as the formation process of words and concepts of 'Mingbao冥報' and 'Yingyan應驗'. Finally, the process and the pedigree of the semantics of 'Baoying' and retribution concept will be reconstructed.
