ABSTRACT

Based on the basic understanding of ‘fandom’, this paper investigated the meaning of fandom and fandom performance, which builds a new form of life through emotional labor performed by subculture. Specifically, by analyzing social big data in two aspects: cultural consumption and cultural practice, we looked at various emotional problems that occur inside and outside the fandom in the process of maintaining or driving fandom performance, or in the process of performing fandom. The main analysis target is posts at Naver Cafe, where the fandom is mainly active, and the analysis target is from July 2021 to June 2024. According to the analysis, the fandom showed a productive acceptance pattern of fandom culture that creates social value and meaning by expanding the sense of belonging and identity built through individual cultural consumption at the personal level. In addition, the positive emotions and mutual bonds of the fandom, which are diverse but consistent in all areas of cultural consumption and cultural practice, were confirmed. This feeling started simply from Fu Bao's charm, but it is valued as a political/economic/cultural value according to the national and capital plan to share the middle class's values of consumption and taste with the public. In this regard, fandom and fandom performance have potential as a kind of mechanism for building new forms of identity and capital.
