ABSTRACT

Contemporary society is a ‘mediatized’ society in which daily life is entirely mediated by media, and media restructures and defines social reality, interaction patterns, and life as a whole. As media logic infiltrates all areas of daily life, modern individuals are swept away by a ceaseless torrent of information and lose their sense of direction, resembling the uncontrollable whirlpool in Edgar Allan Poe’s A Descent into the Maelström. Media philosopher Marshall McLuhan repeatedly cites the sailor’s survival in this story, attributing it to ‘rational detachment’ and ‘pattern recognition.’ Through detachment, the concealed environment becomes visible, establishing a basis for holistic perception that grasps not only individual figures but also the background and movement patterns. Digital detox seeks temporary disconnection or escape from mediatized reality, relying on a linear causal logic of purifying oneself by blocking the pollution source. This study critiques such strategies for failing to understand media as an extension of man and an inescapable environment. Furthermore, this paper highlights that in today’s black box algorithm environment, simple pattern recognition is insufficient, often leading to ‘algorithmic cynicism’ where users feel helpless despite knowing the mechanism. Ultimately, this study proposes that rational detachment must be reformulated as a multi-layered practice: ‘Pattern Recognition - Reflective Awareness - Tactical Engagement.’ It suggests that reflective awareness, the metacognitive realization of one’s own cynicism and structural influence, is the critical turning point for overcoming helplessness. By redefining detachment not as withdrawal but as a dynamic survival strategy of ‘surfing’ within the vortex, this paper offers an epistemological-practical therapy for healthy coexistence with the extended nervous system of media.
