AB - The purpose of this paper is to examine the appellation ‘Dokdo’ island and its use in France and Korea from a historical perspective. This allows a better understanding of Korea’s claim to the legitimacy of sovereignty over the island. Before the use of the name Dokdo, this island was called: Usan-do, Sok-do, Sambong-do, Gaji-do, Seok-do, etc. ‘Dokdo’ was first discovered by Liancourt whaling ships, so it was first called ‘Liancourt Rock’. Historically and geographically, the name Dokdo was first used in the 20th century. This paper also proposes a new system of notation of South and North Korean romanization of the appellation ‘Dokdo’.
