AB - The purpose of this paper is to explore high school students’ cognition level of topographic map symbols and the factors which effect their perception. As a result, we found that visual form was the most influential factor in the interpretation and perception of symbols. We also found that cartographic communication was realized efficiently and positively when concrete figure symbols are engaged. Map users' learning experience and familiarity with the symbols were also important factors. But the influence of the simplicity of visual figures was insignificant. For the 43 symbols used in our study, the most positively evaluated symbols were school, aerodrome and Buddhist temple. Adversely, cemetery, warehouse, court, Public Prosecutors' Office were poorly communicated. Highly communicative topographic map symbols should be developed on the basis of those cognitive characteristics.
