ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the cartographic characteristics of French statistical graphical album of the last half of 19th centuries. This paper begins by considering the development background of the 19th century French thematic mapping. Social engineering and statistical graphics played most important roles in the production of this atlas. Secondly, themes of maps are mainly concentrated on transportation network for the cost benefit analysis. Thirdly, for choropleth maps, equal intervals and natural breaks are used for data classification and sequential scheme and red-yellow diverging scheme were selected to measure nominal level. Fourthly, for flow maps, line’s width is made proportional to magnitude of the volume of traffic, and color and texture are used for the difference of traffic type. Fifthly, for proportional symbols maps, multivariate maps which represent more than four attributes are numerous and they cause some difficulty for map reading. Sixthly, cartograms are used for representation of time space convergence and cost space convergence.
