ABSTRACT

The national land-cover maps (2000 and 2009) produced by Korea Ministry of Environment are used as a basic information in various studies such as hydrological, ecological study, and vulnerability assessment of natural hazard. However, the difficulty lies in using the national land-cover maps for analysis of land-cover change due to the lack of accuracy in the national land-cover 2000 map. This study aimed to make a method to estimate the area about each land-cover in the year 2000 using a national land-cover 2009 map and land categories data of statistical yearbooks. We applied the method to estimate the area of each land-cover classification for evaluating the efficiency of the method in 6 sites near the DukYuSan (mountain). In the results, the difference between the estimated area of the year 2000 and the area in a statistical yearbook was overall 6.12 km2, compared to 13.10 km2 between a national land-cover 2000 map and the area in a statistical yearbook. Trends of land-cover changes (2000~2009) in the national land-cover maps correspond to the trends in the statistical yearbooks 54.2%, compared to 95.8% for the estimated changes. The results show that suggesting estimation method in this study can be useful to estimate the area about each land-cover in the year 2000 rather than using only national land-cover maps.
