ABSTRACT

Recently some studies maintain their focus on migration as one of causes explaining the educational gap among regions. The purposes of this research are to examine the relationship between the gap in educational achievements and school-age migration in a metropolitan area and to discuss how the migration might be related to changes in population composition, educational environment, and housing market of regions. The study area is Daegu Metropolitan City and main findings are following. First, there is a regional gap in educational achievements regardless of the level of school and the difference in English and math subjects is remarkable. Second, educational achievements are globally and locally clustered and the tendency of spatial clustering is more clear as promoting the level of school. Third, the net migration rate of lower grades in elementary (8~10 years old) shows the largest positive correlation and the positive and significant relation appears only until higher grades in elementary (10~13 years old). Fourth, educational achievements and school-age migration have a bidirectional relationship. Migration triggered by the educational gap might bring about changes in regions through increasing demand for education and housing services as well as altering population composition. These changes might reinforce selective migration. That is, the relation between the educational gap and migration shows a circular and cumulative process.
