ABSTRACT

Recently, with the development of IT and advancement of GIS issues, more attention is paid to creation and sharing of social media data. The tweet data generated in social media is different from the traditional geographic information, and is gradually complementing and replacing it. Notwithstanding its importance, there is little research on tweet data in terms of theoretical review and quantitative analysis in the field of geography. Based on it, the purpose of this paper is to review the issues of tweets in the context of digital divide theoretically, and then to explore the characteristics of tweet data in three aspects empirically: spatial pattern, temporal visualization, and relationship with socio-demographic factors. In the case analysis of King County, US, spatial and temporal clusters were investigated, and the urban-rural divide of tweet occurrence was identified. In addition, spatial distribution of the tweets might be related to some socio-demographic distribution such as distribution of young population, income.
