ABSTRACT

Li+ co-doping was introduced into SrAl2O4:Mn4+ red phosphors to enhance their optical properties for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). The effects of Li+ ion incorporation on the crystal structure, absorption characteristics, and photoluminescence properties of the SrAl2O4:Mn4+ phosphors were investigated. The absorption and photoluminescence intensities gradually increased with increasing Li+ concentration and reached their maximum values at a Li+ concentration of 8 mol%. This enhancement can be attributed to the effective charge-compensation effect of Li⁺ ions, which suppresses defect formation induced by the substitution of Mn⁴⁺ ions in the SrAl₂O₄ lattice. However, further increase in the Li⁺ concentration resulted in a decrease in both absorption and photoluminescence intensities, suggesting the formation of excessive lattice distortion and defect complexes at high Li⁺ concentrations. These results demonstrate that appropriate Li⁺ co-doping is an effective strategy for improving the optical performance of the SrAl₂O₄:Mn⁴⁺ red phosphors for pc-WLED applications.
