Hwang Doyeon’s Medical Achievements and His Other Name, Hwang Dosun

Purpose : The purpose of this article is to make a clarification that Hwang Doyeon(黃度淵) was a official doctor(醫官) who even served as royal doctor(御醫), rather than merely a general doctor who worked in the private sector. The article also attempts to give a new perspective on the medical history about the late period of Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty. Methods : In researching Hwang Doyeon's master work, the Gains and Losses of Medical Orthodoxy(醫宗損益), the article looks at his clinical medicines. Analyzing the historical records, the article makes an assumption that Hwang Doyeon and Hwang Dosoon(黃道淳), who was selected as an officer to discuss medicine with other medical officers(議藥同參), are the identical person. On this assumption, the article tries to reinterpret the medicine during the later Joseon Dynasty period. Result & Conclusion : The records, including the royal medical treatment records of the Gains and Losses of Medical Orthodoxy, the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat(承政院日記), the genealogy of Changwon Hwangs(昌原黃氏世譜), academic paper and government documents released posthumously, demonstrated that Hwang Doyeon and Hwang Dosoon are the same person. If so, we can have new historical interpretation about medical history of late Joseon Dynasty. First, during the late of Joseon Dynasty, there was an official and active medical knowledge interaction between government and private sector. Second, the Joseon’s medicine has been established its own medical system based on the Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine(東醫寶鑑), trying to cope with cholera and other contemporary epidemics without relying on Chinese warm disease(溫病) medicine. Third, the Compilation of Formulas and Medicinals(方藥合編), is regarded not only as a must-read medical reading for medical doctors, also playing an important role on popularization of Korean medical knowledge.

Comparison of 29 Diagrams of Heart originated from MingTangZangFuTu(明堂臟腑圖)

Objectives : The transition of the 29 diagrams of Heart originated from MingTangZangFuTu will be used to understand the shape of heart and the changes of people's understanding of heart. Methods : The 29 diagrams of Heart originated from MingTangZangFuTu are divided according to their shape elements (Heart itself, internal curvatures, structures above heart, wuzangxi, and excursus). Then its transitions are analyzed, and each shape element is compared to modern anatomy and its textual basis is searched. Results : The lengthy cylinderical organ situated above the heart is composed of upper part consisting with joints and the lower part void of joints. The upper part is Pyewan (such as the lungs) and fall into trachea. The lower part is Xinxi or Feixi which are either relative vein (or aorta) or left bronchus that passes behind the heart. This depiction of the structures around the heart can be considered to have composed by actual observance of a physical heart, a method that is similar to anatomy. However, the shape of the heart itself is described as a lotus flower that has not been bloomed, a depiction which finds its origin from Zhongguangbuzhu huangdineijing suwen (762). The three short curvatures inside the heart is described as Pericardium, influenced by Shisijingfahui (1341) in its depiction, or as sammo, influenced by Nanjing. Structures that are connected directly from the heart to spleen, kidney, and uterus are not found in modern anatomy. The saying in Excursus "All cords of five internal organs belong to heart" is based on Huatuoxuanmenneizhaotu, and this is changed to the saying cords of four internal organs belong to heart in Leijingtuyi for the first time. Conclusions : The authors of medical scriptures at the time did not have a method of direct observance when they were copying heart diagrams. Therefore, they made changes to the source material's diagram and excursus while being influenced by Nanjing, Huatuoxuanmenneizhaotu, and Shisijingfahui. Then the doctors' understandings with regards to the shape and function of heart were reflected during that process.

A Study on the concept of hidden Yin in summer by Zhu Danxi

Objectives : The concept of hidden Yin in summer by Zhu Danxi deals with the relationship between summer heat disease and hidden yin inside of human body. This paper attempts to ponder upon the clinical issues around which the discussions regarding the topic unfolded, and upon the texts on which the doctors of the discussions based their opinions. Methods : First, Danxi's argument as discussed in Gézhìyúlùn is analyzed to find out his understandings of clinical issues and his textual sources on which he based his new perspective. Moreover, the prescriptions that Danxi thought was problematic and the concept of hidden yin as it existed before the time of Danxi are reviewed, and these findings are used understand Zhangjingyue's ground of criticism against Danxi. Lastly, this paper contemplates how these opposing opinions may be helpful to the general principles of medical theories. Results & Conclusions : There was a trend before the time of Danxi of abusing drugs as prescription based on warm-heat, understanding that a human body has yin-cold during summer. However, Danxi brought forth a new concept of yin deficiency in order to correct people's misunderstanding. Despite his effort, Zhangjingyue and other doctors contemporary to Danxi emphasized on one hand that human body is placed on a state of external heat inside the cold, and on the another, criticized Danxi of failing to fully understand the principle of "Abandon the time and follow the symptoms", a principle which asserts that the cold and warm of medicine should be decided by the symptom itself and not by the season. The value of these contradicting assertions seems to hold true even to this day because it helps us understand that the principles of "Counting Season as a Treatment Factor" and "Abandon the time and follow the symptoms" could be applied with balance in conjunction with each other.

A Study on the Origin of Moyuan in Wenyilun

Objectives : This paper contemplates how the special features found in Moyuan as revealed in Wenyilun has continued from the Moyuan concepts of past includig Huangdineinjing. The author of this paper attempted to distinguish common and different points between the two, and how these features changed in the following generations. Methods : The concept of Moyuan as revealed in Huangdineinjing is first reviewed before laying out the concepts of Moyuan in Wenyilun by different categories. These two concepts are then compared. A Chinese medicine literature database is used in continuing this study, and materials are selected with relation to the special features of Moyuan. Results : The special feature of half-exterior half-interior found in the Moyuan in Wenyilun is similar with that in Neijing in that they both thought Moyuan existed between the stomach, the lungs, and the five organs. The concealability of Moyuan is similar with the explanation of Moyuan in Suwen·nuelun, and it is related with the story of Gaohuang in Chunqiu Zuozhuan. Compared to the fact that the concept of Moyuan in Neijing is explained as that pathogenic factor enters the surface of the body in sequence, the concept of Moyuan in Wenyilun is conveyed in that the pathogenic factor conceals itself first before being divided into exterior and interior. Moyuan is also related to upright qi, and Gaohuang-yuan: origin of Gaohuang, too, is connected Shenjiandongqi: the energy that moves between the two kidnets, and also the triple burner. Conclusions : The concepts of "Half-exterior Half-interior", concealability, and "divide it into several places in half-exterior" , and upright qi contained within the Moyuan in Wenyilun are studied for their origins, and this effort is anticipated to be greatly helpful in both understanding the historical contexts of Wuyouke Wenyilun and conducting studies on clinical application of Moyuan theory.
