ABSTRACT

Oriental medicine, as defined by the book World Medicine, is one of the six major healing systems of the world. According to a survey done by the World Health Organization, more than one-third of the world's population is being treated with Oriental medicine(acupuncture). Dating back some 5,000 years, Oriental medicine has been practiced systematically. rationally and consistently by the people of China, Korea, Japan and southeast Asian countries. European countries began using it when the Jesuits and Dutch merchant traders brought back the information from China in the 16th century. At this point, the original text of acupuncture is important, so I have chosen Ku Chim Sip I Won(九鍼十二原) of the Young Chu(靈樞). This article, Ku Chim Sip I Won(九鍼十二原) of the Young Chu(靈樞), can be divided into eight chapters. The contents are at follows: In chapter Ⅰ : The purpose of establishing acupuncture and the effect of acupuncture. In chapter Ⅱ : The accurate effect of little needle(小鍼) according as the doctor tonifies what is deficient and sedates what is excess. In chapter Ⅲ: The method of tonification and sedation of acupuncture. In chapter Ⅳ: The names, shapes, and effects of nine needles(九鍼). In chapter Ⅴ: The injuries of accupuncture and the response of accurate therapy of accupuncture. In chapter Ⅵ: 5 visceral points(五腧穴) and the importance of accurate therapy of accupuncture. In chapter Ⅶ: 12 original points(十二原穴) In chapter Ⅷ: The therapy of accupuncture of syndrome and the importance of technique of accupuncture. I have tried to stay true to the original text as much as possible, and used some reference books to understand the meaning of the text well. The Chim Hae(鍼解) in the So Moon(素問) and the So Chim Hae(小鍼解) of the Young Chu(靈樞) also comment the contents of the Ku Chim Sip I Won(九鍼十二原), but partly they are different. So we need the comparative study of the Chim Hae(鍼解) in the So Moon(素問) and the So Chim Hae(小鍼解) of the Young Chu(靈樞) to understand the meaning of the Ku Chim Sip I Won(九鍼十二原) well. I therefore made a comparison of this part with the other original texts, and used many reference books of physicians through the history.
