AB - Sam-Eum-Sam-Yang(三陰三陽) is one of the most important conceptual schemes used in Oriental Medicine. In this dissertation, the author applied this concept in the classification of the various forms of human hands, and tried to find out each individual's character traits according to the insights gained from that classification. The results are as follows. 1. Gweol-Eum(厥陰) Hand Type is characterized by softness, shortness and plumpness. The hand gets short and plump, because the energy of generation, as the flow of Gi(氣) testifies in case of the Gweol-Eum phase, is strong, but it cannot be flowering its power onto the outside world. The form of the hand is thus shaped in analogy energy flow. (7.1%) 2. So-Eum(少陰) Hand Type is presented as straigtforward, knots being ample. This is fit to the image of So-Eum(少陰)'s propensity to expand. (28.6%) 3. Tae-Eum(太陰) Hand Type shows itself as long fingers with wide, flat fingernails. It mirrors the image of Tae-Eum(太陰) that grows to the limit, but couldn't go beyond it. (6.1%) 4. So-Yang(少陽) Hand Type is also straightforward but it tries to return to itself, with knots being big, but distal ends being sharp. (6.1%) 5. Yang-Myung(陽明) Hand Type obviously shows the image of reservation, the thickness of the whole length of one finger being uniform and straight. The distal end gets sharp and the skin has dark hue. (33.7%) 6. Tae-Yang(太陽) Hand Type is the type showing the well-reserved Yang-Gi(陽氣), the creases on the knuckle being pushed back toward the wrist joint. The flesh is ample and soft. The difference from the Gweol-Eum Type is that in this type, softness is the major characteristic and elasticity is less apparent than in Gweol-Eum. (18.4%)7. Tae-Eum Type was the most assertive while the Tae-Yang type was the least. (p<.05). So-Yang was the most easily-motivated while the Gweol-Eum was the least. (p<.01) The most considerate group was the So-Eum Type, and So-Yang was the least considerate. (p<.005) The connection between the aspects of Sam-Eum-Sam-Yang and the individual's character traits deduced from their hand types, seems meaningful according to this author's study.
