AB - Objectives :
Abdominal obesity, especially visceral obesity is a risk factor of metabolic syndrome. It also affects body figure and structure like spinal curvature, and vice versa. The present study was designed to evaluate correlation between abdominal adiposity and change of lumbo-sacral curvature.
Methods :
Subjects were 36 obese pre-menopausal Korean women (mean age at baseline was 31.78±6.18). Body Mass Index(BMI), waist circumference(WC) were measured. Abdominal fat was estimated using a region of interest(ROI, L2-upper iliac crest) of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA) which was reported to be associated with total visceral adipose tissue(VAT) as well as MRI-derived VAT area at L4-5. To evaluate abdominal fat accumulation ratio, ROI data divided by total body fat, trunk fat and leg fat have been used for analysis. Lumbar lordotic angle and Ferguson angle were measured using lateral view of whole spine X-ray in standing position.
Results :
Pearson's correlation coefficient was used for statistical analysis. The result was that BMI and WC were significantly correlated with ROI (p<0.01), but not with abdominal fat accumulation ratio. In contrast, lumbar lordotic angle and Ferguson angle were correlated with abdominal fat accumulation ratio, not with ROI.
Conclusions :
These results show that BMI and WC could be used as indicators of total amount of abdominal fat and lumbar lordotic angle and Ferguson angle as indicators of abdominal fat accumulation ratio.
