AB - This paper examines the meaning and function of the ‘Nominaliser-type’ negative question in Japanese and Korean. Especially, the issue in this paper is to reveal the correspondence between Japanese and Korean. Analysis results are as follows. (1)The negative question of noun predicates in Japanese and Korean is subdivided into three types (i.e. type Ⅰ, type Ⅱ, type Ⅲ), which are manifested in only the one form in Japanese, unlike the three forms in Korean. (2)Basically, the features of the negative question of noun predicates in Japanese and Korean are reflected in the ‘Nominaliser-type’negative questions. However, There is the ‘Nominaliser-type’negative question of type Ⅰ and Ⅱ, but not type Ⅲ. (3)The ‘Nominaliser-type’ negative question of type Ⅱ in Japanese and Korean is classified into ‘the provision of uncertain information’, ‘the request for opinion’, and ‘the request for confirmation’. (4)The basic meaning ‘Nominaliser-type’ negative questions of type Ⅱ expresses is ‘doubt’, which merely means the selection of the convincing hypothesis in the case of Korean, whereas in the case of Japanese it means further speculation.
