AB - In Modern Japanese, there are two types of desiderative constructions: mizu-ga nomitai and mizu-o nomitai which both mean ‘I want to drink water’. These two constructions have similar meanings, and one can often be replaced by the other. However, there are some cases where replacement is not permitted. This inability is due to the differences in the meanings of the two case particles -ga and -o in the desiderative constructions. In this study, the differences between the '-ga -tai' construction and the '-o -tai' construction are presented. The former expresses spontaneous desideration, and the latter expresses volitional desideration. In this study, many related phenomena such as types of verb, tense restriction, the modification of words, adverb co-occurrence, co-occurrence with the other specific constructions, and the exhaustive listing interpretation of the case particle '-ga' are considered as support for the argument of this study.
