AB - This article describes a survey that was conducted to investigate the approach taken by teachers who are native speakers of Japanese(native Japanese teachers, henceforth) when correcting the shape of Kanji written by Korean learners of Japanese. Specifically, it analyzed and examined the different approaches to correction in terms of the teaching place, namely Japan and Korea. The results were as follows:1) Native Japanese teachers in both Japan and Korea tended to focus on similar Kanji issues for corrections. In other words it can be presumed that the native Japanese teachers correct the shape of Kanji to both learners of JFL and learners of JSL in the same way.
2) Teacher’s backgrounds such as the teacher’s age and major, were not found to result in significant differences in their approach to correction.
3) The correction of native Japanese teachers for Korean learners of Japanese was based on the correction of errors of Japanese students.
4) The tolerance of native Japanese teachers for Kyujitai differed in accordance with the teachers’ age.
Besides, with regard to the correction of individual shapes of Kanji, it became clear that when native Japanese teachers checked errors made by Korean learners of Japanese, they tended to be strict with kanji or the number of strokes, the errors of which would make the meaning different, and with kanji which have similar shapes to each other and thus can become different kanji with a mistake in the combination of points (dots) or strokes.
