AB - This paper investigated errors in Chinese characters of proper nouns shown in Japanese travel guidebooks in Kyeongju, which is the thousand-year-old ancient capital of Silla, housing the Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto etc. which are registered as UNESCO World Heritage, and presented the correct Chinese characters. It analyzed errors of proper noun Chinese characters because Korean and Japanese differ from each other in conveying the meaning of Chinese characters due to the differences in pronunciation and notation in terms of actual use even if both languages are of the same Chinese character cultural sphere. In particular, terms used to describe ruins and artifacts include many proper nouns such as person or place names and cultural property names, therefore if inadvertently notated as incorrect Chinese characters, they may not only point to a totally different place or result in misunderstanding by being distorted to a fictional figure, but also value or meaning contained in cultural properties cannot be conveyed correctly in many cases. Given that foreign tourists understand the history and culture of the region through travel guidebooks distributed in touristattractions, research correcting errors in proper noun Chinese characters shown in travel guidebooks is an urgent and important task in that wrong travel guidebooks may damage the image of Kyeongju, and furthermore may distort our history and culture.
