AB - This study is a research to discuss telops of Korean and Japanese comedy programs. It has revealed that (1) even though comedy programs are categorized in the same genre in both Korean and Japanese, the number of telops deployed is greatly different from program to program; (2) Comedy programs in Korean use more telops than those in Japanese; and (3) while comedy programs in Japanese make sure that their telops faithfully transcribe 100% what is being verbally spoken at that time, those in Korean tend to work much more off the non-verbal telops, irrelevant to the actual verbal words. In addition, (4) the study has also clarified another difference that, unlike in Japanese, comedy programs in Korean frequently use telops which consist of few syllables or consonants only that describe feelings, situations and so forth. Since this is a very interesting linguistic issue, the study is considered academically significant in the sense that such a difference would further be investigated by other follow-up researches.
