ABSTRACT

This study is based on the results of a survey conducted on university students in Japan, Korea and China and analyzes their interpersonal comment behaviors to close friends or acquaintances in positive and negative situations. The questionnaire consists of 40 positive and negative situations and required the participants to answer the situations by a seven-point scale. The major findings for this study are as follows. In the case of the positive situations: Differences in the degree of closeness affect the frequency of positive comment, with greater frequency in the case of close friends. The topics related to achievement or capability are commented frequently; on the other hand, topics concerning material richness or personal preference are not commented so much. In Korea the differences due to the degree of closeness are outstanding, however, there are not many differences in Japan and in China. In China, positive comments are made on the partner most frequently, regardless of the degree of closeness. In the case of the negative situations: Differences in the degree of closeness affect the frequency of negative comment, with greater frequency in the case of close friends. Negative comment is not frequent on unfortunate situations or something that does not show a potential to be improved. But, negative comment is made frequently when people do not behave nice enough to maintain a good interpersonal relationship.
