AB - This studyinvestigates how the animacy, which characterizes the difference betweeniru and aru, appears in the teiru and tearu constructions. The results are as follows.
Aru conveystheexistence of an inanimate object. However, teiru is used when an inanimate object is used as the subject in a sentence in which the verb phrase indicates an action of the inanimate object, I. e. the inanimate object is the agent. Tearu is used when an inanimate object is used as the subject in a sentence in which the verb phrase indicates an existence state of the inanimate object.
Here, the inanimate objecthas a status of the object, rather than the agent, of the verb phrase.
Iru conveys the existence of an animate object. However, tearu is used when the verb phrase indicates the existence state of the object of the agent, although the animate object is the agent and appears in the subjective position. Teiru is used when an animate object is the agent and appears in the subjective position, and the verb phrase indicatesan action of the animate object.
That is, we found that teiru is used in the case where the dynamic characteristic of an animate object is involved, whereastearu is used in the case where the static characteristic of an inanimate object is involved. In other words, the meaning of teiru and tearu excludes the biological factor of the animacy that is inherited fromiru·aru, and reflects the dynamic factor of iru and the static factor of aru.
