ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the co-occurrence of ‘RASHII’(らしい),within the framework of modality and Evidentiality, from the perspective of language universality and specificity. According to the corpus and the survey, ‘RASHII’can co-occur with the Boulomaic modal markers ‘TAI,TAGARU, TEHOSHII, TEMORAITAI’, the Deontic modal markers‘NAKEREBANARANAI, HOUGAII, TOII, BAII, TEII, TEMOII, BEKIDA’, the Epistemic modal markers‘KAMOSHIRENAI, NICHIGAINAI, HAZUDA’,and the Evidentiality markers‘MITAIDA,(SHI)SOUDA,(SURU)SOUDA, YOUDA’.A polysemous marker can co-occur with others when they not only express different levels of meanings, but also have a harmonious nature. The co-occurrence forms also follow strict word order. Referring to the DDE rule, the paper further analyses the co-occurrence sequence of ‘Dynamic>Deontic>Epistemic’. The co-occurrence of Japanese modality with cross-linguistic universality observes the basic co-occurrence sequence of ‘VP>Dynamic(Boulomaic)>Deontic>Epistemic>Evidentiality> (Evidentiality)>Pragmatic components/Sentence-final Particles’.
