ABSTRACT

With the advances of contact linguistics, contact languages which were stigmatized and viewed as curiosities have come to be seen as central entities in research into language development and change. Gone are the days when contact languages were crude and broken tongues;now they are end-products of processes of reconstruction and creativity. Just as the concept of “Englishes” has taken root, with Japanese too, it is crucial henceforth that we shed centrism for the continuum-based pluralistic conceptualization of “Japanese languages” or “Japaneses”. Moreover, the time has come for a fundamental rethinking of the adulation of linguistic homogeneity and the repudiation of language differences which has pervaded our views throughout the modern age.
