A Study of “te-yaru” expressing the strong will of the speaker

ABSTRACT

This paper examined the meaning and usage of the "te-yaru" taking the form of "suru", which expresses the intention of agent. In the traditional research of "te-yaru" was focused on elucidating the difference with usage which does not express benefits. However, in this paper, the analysis of the use of "te-yaru" including all benefit and non-benefit, depending on how the agent acts on the affected, the meaning and usage is summarized into three types, that is, the benefit-providing type, the demage-providing type, and the self-revealing type. and we showed that the lexical-grammatical features and contextual features of "te-yaru". In addition, It revealed that the benefit-providing type is the most commonly used type which is 58.3%. and it is decided that the demage-providing type is 30.8% second largest. the self-revealing type which shows the strong will of the previous research is found to stay at 10.9% of the total. Considering that main verb "yaru" is a form of action for another person, the result of the demage-providing type, and the self-revealing type occupying 40% of the population is noteworthy. Through this study, the possibility of a contrasting research with the auxiliary verb "te-miseru", which has a meaning of strong will, and a comparative study with Korean volitional expression of auxiliary verbs which derived from supplementary verbs.
